General information
Propranolol is a beta-blocker. Propranolol is used to treat tremors, angina (chest pain), hypertension (high blood pressure), heart rhythm disorders, and other heart or circulatory conditions. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack, and to reduce the severity and frequency of migraine headaches.

Follow your doctor's instructions about tapering your dose. Propranolol is only part of a complete program of treatment for hypertension that may also include diet, exercise, and weight control. The recommended dose for arrhythmias is 10 to 30 mg propranolol orally 3 to 4 times a day, before meals and at bedtime. The recommended dose for myocardial infarction is 40 mg orally 3 times a day for 1 month, then increase to 60 to 80 mg orally 3 times a day as tolerated. The recommended dose for for migraine prophylaxis is 80 mg orally per day in divided doses. The recommended dose for Benign Essential Tremor is 40 mg propranolol orally 2 times a day. The recommended dose for Aortic Stenosis is 20 to 40 mg orally 3 to 4 times a day, before meals and at bedtime.
